Some coffee varieties have earned a special reputation, based on a combination of rarity, unusual circumstances, and particularly good flavor. These coffees, from Jamaica Blue Mountain to Hawaiian Kona, to Tanzanian Peaberry command a premium price. But the rarity, unique flavors and interesting background of Kopi Luwak are unlikely to be matched by an other.

While it has been referred to as the world's best coffee, taste is subjective, and the different production methods of Kopi Luwak around the world bring varying results. Most Kopi Luwak roast levels approximate Cinnamon (named for color, not taste) to Medium roast.

On the Indonesian island of Sumatra, there live a species of mammals referred to as 'Luwaks' by the locals. Living in the trees, they feed on the red ripe coffee cherry. The Luwaks however are unable to digest the coffee beans and thus graciously deposit them on the jungle floor. There, they are collected by the locals, roasted, and then ground into a coffee just like any other.

The resulting coffee is said to be like no other. The aroma is rich and strong. The body is incredibly full. Like a syrupy, the taste is thick with a hint of chocolate and lingers on the tongue with a long clean finish.
